Plot summary
Agent J has worked beside Agent K for fifteen years, and K will not explain what happened between him and Boris. Boris the Animal, the last of his race, breaks out of a prison on the Moon, where K left him after shooting off his arm in 1969, and comes to Earth wanting revenge. Boris slips away when the two agents corner him. Boris then uses a time machine to travel back to July 1969, and present-day Earth is left open to invasion by the Boglodites, the aliens the shield called the ArcNet once kept out. J obtains a time machine from Jeffrey Price, an electronics clerk whose father built the technology, and follows Boris into the past, where a younger Agent K arrests him.

- Filming began in November 2010 even though the script's second and third acts were unfinished; director Barry Sonnenfeld later admitted, "if this movie does as well as I think it will, it was genius. If it's a total failure, then it was a really stupid idea."
- Will Smith first proposed the film's premise to director Barry Sonnenfeld during the filming of Men in Black II in 2002, suggesting that Agent J travel back in time to save his partner Agent K while exploring K's backstory.
- Rick Baker used the time travel plot as a reason to make the 1969 creatures "retro" aliens reminiscent of science fiction B movies: "Fishbowl space helmets, guys with space suits with ribbed things on it, exposed brains, [and] bug eyes."
- Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Yao Ming and Tim Burton all make uncredited cameo appearances in the film as aliens seen on the television monitors.
- Pitbull's "Back in Time", which accompanies the end credits but was left off the soundtrack album, was the first lead single for a Men in Black film not performed by Will Smith.
- With a production budget of $215 million, Men in Black 3 became one of the most expensive films ever made.
