Plot summary
Jimmie Rainwood is an airline engineer in Long Beach, California, where he lives with his wife Kate, who is attending college. Detectives Mike Parnell and Danny Scalise work narcotics and skim drugs from their busts for their own use and for sale, brutalizing or framing anyone who crosses them. Parnell, high on cocaine, has the wrong address, and the two break into Jimmie's home. Jimmie is shot in the stomach after walking out of the bathroom with a hair dryer, and the detectives, fearing drug tests and charges, scatter narcotics through the house and put a gun in his hand. With a college marijuana possession on his record, Jimmie is convicted and sentenced to six years in prison.
