Plot summary
Hunter Conrad comes from a working-class family and has recently married Richie Conrad, who is in line to run his father's Manhattan corporation. The couple lives in a large house upstate, where Hunter spends her days alone while Richie works. At a dinner with his parents, Katherine and Michael, to celebrate her pregnancy, she is cut off mid-story when her father-in-law turns to Richie about business. Home alone, Hunter swallows a marble on impulse and finds the sensation exhilarating; thumbtacks, metal figurines and a battery follow. A routine ultrasound turns up an anomaly in her abdomen, and surgery removes objects lodged in her intestine. The diagnosis is pica, and Richie meets it with anger rather than concern. His parents arrange for a psychiatrist in the city, and Richie brings in Luay, a family friend from Syria, to watch over her.
