Plot summary

In 1937 Louisiana, four girls led by Vivi Abbott swear a blood oath in the woods and name themselves the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Decades later in New York City, Vivi's eldest daughter, playwright Siddalee Walker, tells a Time reporter that her unhappy childhood feeds her work. The reporter turns the remark into a story about abuse and family secrets, and Vivi, furious, tells Siddalee she is dead to her, then cuts her from the will. Siddalee calls off her mother's invitation to her wedding to Connor McGill. The other Ya-Ya Sisters, Caro, Teensy and Necie, drug Siddalee's drink, carry her from New York to Louisiana, and begin showing her their scrapbook of Vivi's past.
