Plot summary
Near Denver, a border collie named Bingo does chores for a circus, until a star poodle injures a foot and Bingo is asked to fill in at that night's performance, where his fear of fire keeps him from jumping through a burning hoop. Berated by the circus master, he leaves the big top behind. Twelve-year-old Chuckie Devlin tries to impress his friends by jumping his bike across a river, falls in, and Bingo pulls him out. The two become close, and Chuckie hides the dog in a cabinet at home because his family wants no pet. Bingo's mischief gives him away, and the news is set aside when Hal, Chuckie's father, is traded to the Green Bay Packers and the family prepares to move to Wisconsin.
