Plot summary
Two witches share a single human existence, and only one of them can hold human form at a time. Miranda, a chain-smoking witch, has married Sam, and while his daughter Jenny, who is vegetarian, and her husband Steve are on vacation, she settles into the family house. When the couple return, they find the refrigerator filled with meat and the herb collection disturbed. Miranda's daughter Priscilla takes the human body and will not give it back, so Miranda lives as the cat. Around the household the pair cause havoc one at a time. Jenny, along with a private detective and a police officer who has been suspended, sets out to stop them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Wicked Stepmother (1989)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film is best known as Bette Davis's last: she withdrew after filming began, citing major problems with the script, Larry Cohen's direction and the way she was being photographed. Cohen later claimed she really dropped out due to ill health but avoided publicizing it for fear it would affect future employment, a claim Davis disputed.
- Joan Crawford, who died in 1977, appears in an archival photograph as the deceased mother of the family; the estranged relationship in the film references the memoir Mommie Dearest, written by Crawford's adopted daughter Christina Crawford, and Crawford was known for her feud with Davis on What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.
SPOILER
To explain Davis's absence the script was rewritten to introduce Miranda's daughter Priscilla, a witch who inhabited Miranda's cat, the two sharing one existence so that while one is human the other must live in the form of a cat.
