Plot summary
The story runs in two strands, a century apart, both about men seeking freedom. In 1856, Samuel Woodward takes his family off the Monroe Plantation outside Richmond, Virginia, heading north to Canada. A hidden network of helpers, the Underground Railroad, moves them along, and Quakers and Frederick Douglass are among those who aid them. The notorious slave hunter Plimpton pursues them. In 1748, John Newton commands a slave ship sailing from Africa toward America with a cargo of captive people. Samuel's great grandfather, carried from Gambia toward a British colony in the New World, is on board under Newton's command.
