Plot summary
RJR Nabisco is a conglomerate with tobacco and food businesses, and F. Ross Johnson, a self-made multimillionaire, serves as its president and chief executive. The company had developed Premier, a smokeless cigarette, in the hope of lifting its stock price, and Johnson receives advanced news that the product will likely be a commercial failure. He decides to take the company private himself in 1988. Henry Kravis, a pioneer of the leveraged buyout, and his cousin oppose him. Kravis had discussed such a deal with Johnson beforehand, and he objects when Johnson instead takes the matter to Shearson Lehman Hutton, the American Express division.
