Plot summary
A pandemic killed much of the population, democracy collapsed, and a totalitarian government took power in the United States, banning private cars, boats and aircraft and settling its capital in Boston. There Franklyn Hart, once a race car driver, fronts the mass transit system and privately despises the regime; the plague had taken his family. He has kept his orange Porsche 917 roadster hidden beneath his basement and restored it with parts scavenged from abandoned junkyards. Ring McCarthy, a young electronics enthusiast, works out the plan to drive to Free California, which has broken away from the rest of the country, and Hart takes him along. The government official Hawkins watches their progress and brings in a retired Air Force pilot, J.G. Williams.
