Plot summary
Rocky Balboa comes home from Moscow to a hero's welcome in Philadelphia. Promoter George Washington Duke wants him back in the ring against top challenger Union Cane, but Rocky turns him down. Then Paulie admits he handed power of attorney to Rocky's accountant, who embezzled the family fortune and stopped paying taxes; the mansion and most belongings are sold and the Balboas move back to Rocky's old working-class block. Adrian urges a doctor's exam, which finds damage from the Drago fight, and Rocky retires from boxing. He reopens Mighty Mick's Gym, left to his son by Mickey Goldmill, and begins training Tommy Gunn, a young fighter from Oklahoma, while his son Robert struggles at school.

In Sylvester Stallone's original script, Rocky was killed in the street fight with Tommy Gunn and died in Adrian's arms; producer Irwin Winkler said that ending was never even shot before Stallone was talked into changing it.- The speech the ghost of trainer Mickey Goldmill gives Rocky in the flashback sequence was based on a real 1985 interview with boxing trainer Cus D'Amato, given shortly after Mike Tyson's first professional fight.
- The Rocky statue, originally commissioned for Rocky III, had already been given to the city of Philadelphia and moved to the Spectrum arena, so it had to be hauled back to the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps just to film Rocky V.
