Plot summary
Summer approaches, and the parents of Morris "Mud" Himmel have settled on a computer camp for him. He refuses to go, and his friends are booked into camps of their own, so together they invent a camp with no parents or counselors and let the news travel. Mud blackmails Dennis Van Welker, a former drama teacher who missed most of the payments on an AMC Gremlin and is pursued by a soon-to-retire collector named T.R. Polk, into lending a hand in exchange for $1,000. The children rent an old campground on a lake that was once a hippie commune, tell each family it is a computer camp, a fat camp, a military camp or an acting camp, and spend the fees on food and toys.
