Plot summary
Janie works a telephone switchboard and daydreams about landing a rich husband. Her boyfriend Tom sells cars, and she imagines what married life with him would be like. While listening in on a long-distance call, she hears Dick Hamilton, the town's richest eligible bachelor, talking to the girl he has been seeing, and she wishes she could meet him. A costly car pulls up beside her, and Janie believes the wish has come true. The man at the wheel is Harry, a garage mechanic driving it in for repairs. Harry is taken with her right away, and Janie begins to picture herself as a mechanic's wife.
