Plot summary
Jill Baker's hiccups come on whenever she is nervous or irritated, and at the suggestion of her friend Margie Stallings she visits psychoanalyst Dr. Vengard. In his waiting room she meets Alexander Sebastian, an odd and individualistic pianist who says he is at his best with a single listener in the room but has trouble playing for a large audience. Dr. Vengard's questions leave Jill doubting her marriage to Larry, a business executive. She had thought the marriage happy. Jill invites Sebastian to a dinner Larry is giving for the insurance buyers he hopes to sign, among them Mr. Kafka.
