Plot summary
The Lippencott and Sam Thatcher, roommates at Harvard, have held one plan since freshman year: after commencement they will sail from New York to Siberia and spend two years studying the region's economy before settling down. Sam has said nothing about it to Alexandra Benson, his girlfriend, who is finishing her degree at the New England College for Women and wants him beside her at the college's spring dance. Then the freighter's departure moves up by two weeks, landing at the end of that same weekend. The Lippencott, who doubts Sam will really leave, follows him to the college; Alex's friends, without telling her, work to keep him from the ship.
