Plot summary
The Lanlaire mansion has a new servant, Célestine, who has come to the French countryside determined to rise in the world. She works on Monsieur Lanlaire, who soon prefers her company to his wife's, though Madame Lanlaire, with the valet Joseph, keeps the house under her control. The neighbor, Captain Mauger, becomes obsessed with having Célestine work for him instead and offers marriage if she comes to live with him. Monsieur Lanlaire's sickly son Georges returns to the estate for a time, and his mother buys Célestine new clothes and tells her to look after the young man well, hoping he will stay longer.
