Plot summary
Holly Parker is a shopgirl in San Francisco when she marries Clayton Anderson, a diplomat from a wealthy Connecticut family with political ambitions. His mother Estelle disapproves of the match and keeps a close watch on her daughter-in-law. Clayton is abroad so often that Holly is lonely, and she begins a relationship with Phil Benton, a well-known playboy. When Clayton comes home with news of a promotion in Washington, D.C., and plans to move his wife and their son Clay there, Holly goes to Phil's apartment to end things. Phil tries to force her to stay, falls down a staircase and dies. Estelle, who has had Holly followed, learns of the accident and uses it to make Holly fake her death and leave for Europe under a false identity, cut off from her husband and son.

- Lana Turner feuded with her longtime makeup artist Del Armstrong during the production because she was self-conscious about her unflattering appearance as her character aged from 30 to 55. She said that when she thought he had made her look horrible enough, he told her she "ain't seen nothing yet," and he meant it.
- $1.5 million worth of jewelry was loaned from a New York City firm for the film's female leads, Lana Turner and Constance Bennett, to wear in Madame X.
- Eighty-four sets were built for Madame X on the Universal Studios backlots, the most used for any Ross Hunter production at that time.
- Gig Young was offered the older male lead in Madame X but asked for too much money, so producer Ross Hunter hired John Forsythe instead.
- The role of Estelle Anderson, Holly's mother-in-law, was originally offered to Madeleine Carroll, but Constance Bennett was ultimately cast in the part.
