Biography

Barbara Hershey is an American actress born in Hollywood who has worked in film and television for more than 50 years, moving across Westerns, horror, and comedy. She began acting at 17 in 1965 on Gidget, then appeared in The Monroes and films such as With Six You Get Eggroll (1968), Last Summer (1969), and Boxcar Bertha (1972). The Stunt Man (1980) marked a return to the big screen and a shift from girl roles to women, leading to The Entity (1982), The Right Stuff (1983), The Natural (1984), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), and Hoosiers (1986). She won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for A Killing in a Small Town (1990), took Cannes Best Actress prizes for Shy People (1987) and A World Apart (1988), and earned an Academy Award nomination for The Portrait of a Lady (1996). Later credits include Black Swan (2010), Insidious (2011), Once Upon a Time, The Manor (2021), and 9 Bullets (2022).
