Plot summary
Martha Horgan is mentally challenged and works at a local dry cleaner, where she loses her job over money missing from the cash register. Depressed, she returns to the house she shares with her aunt Frances, where a handyman named Mackey has been hired to repair the porch. Frances is planning a gala for a local politician whose wife drove into the porch after learning of his affair with Frances. Mackey is gentle with Martha and stands up to Getso, who taunts her, smashing the windshield of Getso's van. Martha's fondness for him grows, and he notices without taking advantage of her.

- The announcement of nominations for the 9th Independent Spirit Awards was postponed when the Independent Features Project West ruled A Dangerous Woman ineligible: it had received two nominations but was partly funded by Universal Pictures, which jointly owned Gramercy Pictures with PolyGram, per then-IFPW president Cathy Main.
- Gramercy Pictures president Russell Schwartz said the IFPW's rules made no sense and called the body as archaic as the Academy's foreign-language rules, adding that Universal's only involvement was guaranteeing a bank loan to the filmmaker and its money was not used.
