Plot summary
Abby McClure, a widow, runs the lumberyard her husband left behind and raises three sons. Her matchmaking sister Maxine arranges a telephone call that brings Jake Iverson, a divorcee, to the business dinner Abby is giving that night. Jake, who has no interest in the attention of his neighbor Cleo Ruskin, finds the matchmaking talk tedious and leaves. He and Abby meet again at an all-night supermarket, then at a drive-in run by Herbie Fleck, and stay out until two in the morning. A romance grows, and Jake's teenage daughter Stacey and Abby's sons Flip, Mitch and Jason react badly, making sure neither parent is comfortable in the other's home.

- With Six You Get Eggroll was the first film produced by Cinema Center Films, a newly formed film unit of the CBS television network. It was Doris Day's final film performance and the film debut of George Carlin.
- With Six You Get Eggroll is one of only three Doris Day films that do not feature a vocal performance by her, even though she sang onscreen, in voice-over or over the credits in every movie since 1958's The Tunnel of Love. The other two are 1967's The Ballad of Josie and 1968's Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?.
- Jake Iverson's house in the film was a real home whose interiors and backyard were soundstage sets that bore no resemblance to the actual interior and backyard. The house still looked much as it did in the film until about 2014, and was completely demolished in September 2015 and replaced with a faux-traditional home.
