Alex Rocco
Biography
Alex Rocco was an American actor whose gravelly voice and villain roles made him a familiar screen presence. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and raised in Somerville, he began acting lessons with Leonard Nimoy and adopted the name Alex Rocco. His first film role came in Motorpsycho! (1965), and he played Moe Greene in The Godfather (1972). Other films included The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), That Thing You Do! (1996), The Wedding Planner (2001), and Smokin' Aces (2006). On television he was a regular on The Famous Teddy Z, winning an Emmy Award for supporting actor in a comedy in 1990, and he voiced Roger Meyers Jr. on The Simpsons. He also did voice work for Family Guy and A Bug's Life (1998), and appeared in Magic City and Episodes.

About the name
Alex Rocco took his professional name after he saw the word Rocco on a bakery truck, adopting the name Alex Rocco from that sighting.
Early training
Rocco began acting lessons with Leonard Nimoy, another Boston native. Nimoy helped him get rid of his thick Boston accent and arranged speech lessons for him.
Getting ready for a role
Rocco came back to the Boston area the same year to play a bank robber in The Friends of Eddie Coyle. He arranged for Robert Mitchum to meet local Irish-American gangsters, including Howie Winter, so Mitchum could research his part.
