Plot summary
Set in 1969, Alan Parker studies art at the University of Maine, where a professor calls him obsessed with death. On his birthday, October 30, he is convinced Jessica is ending their relationship, and he gets high in his bathtub and thinks about cutting his wrists. Friends burst in to surprise him, and he wakes in a hospital. Jessica tells him she loves him and hands him tickets for a John Lennon show in Toronto. Then a call comes: his mother Jean has had a stroke. Alan passes the tickets to his roommates and sets out that night to hitchhike to Lewiston, Maine, remembering his father Julian's funeral when he was six. A van driven by Ferris, an army deserter, nearly collides with an oncoming car and spins into a ditch.

- Director Mick Garris wanted John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" for the film's ending and got Yoko Ono's permission to use it, but licensing the song would have cost $50,000, which Garris said was more expensive than any other part of the film.
- The film shows John Lennon's 1969 Toronto performance as something fans knew about in advance, but the appearance was actually kept secret from the public until it happened and Lennon was not advertised on the event's posters.
