Plot summary
Dan and Peter are spending the summer on Fire Island, New York, where they meet Sandy, a young woman who has taken in an injured seagull she found on the beach. The three pass the days together, going to the local cinema, testing their sexual impulses, and drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. Dan and Peter, both virgins themselves, want to sleep with Sandy and believe she is one too. They get to know Rhoda, a slightly younger and socially awkward girl from Ohio who is on the island for the summer. The older three keep her around but tease her, and Rhoda confides that her mother drowned several summers earlier. At Sandy's urging they try to teach Rhoda to swim, though she is afraid of the water.

Last Summer was given an X rating by the MPAA because of the scene in which Rhoda is raped, and was one of a handful of high-profile X-rated films released in 1969. The scene was edited shortly after its theatrical release so the film could be re-rated R.- All original 35mm prints of Last Summer were lost for years until a 16mm print was found in 2001 at Australia's National Film and Sound Archive after a two-year search, reportedly the only surviving print at the time.
