Plot summary
C.C. Bloom is a child performer in New York. Hillary Whitney is an heiress in San Francisco. In 1958 both are in Atlantic City, where C.C. hides from her stage mother, Leona, and Hillary is lost. The two girls meet. They become penpals. Hillary grows up to be a human rights lawyer; C.C.'s singing career falters. Hillary arrives at a dive bar where C.C. is on stage, their first meeting since Atlantic City. She moves into C.C.'s apartment in New York and works for the ACLU. C.C. gets work from director John Pierce. Romantic relationships test the friendship.

- Lifetime remade the film for television, airing it on January 22, 2017, directed by Allison Anders with Idina Menzel playing C.C. and Nia Long playing Hillary.
- A Broadway production, based on the 2024 production at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, began performances at the Majestic Theatre on March 27, 2026 with an opening night on April 22, and closed on May 24, 2026.
- Beaches opened on December 21, 1988 and took $215,865 in its first six days from seven screens, then opened nationwide on January 13, 1989 with $5,160,258 and went on to gross $57,041,866 in the United States and Canada.
- The beach house scenes were filmed at cottage #13 in what is now the Crystal Cove Historic District in Crystal Cove State Park in California.
- A sequel based on the 1991 novel Beaches II: I'll Be There was planned with Barbara Eden attached to star, but it was never filmed.
