Plot summary
Louis Drax has lived through eight near-fatal accidents, and on his ninth birthday he falls from a cliff and is declared dead. He wakes before doctors can begin an autopsy, then lies in a coma. Dr. Allan Pascal becomes the lead doctor handling the boy's treatment. Louis's father, Peter, has disappeared, and the investigator Dalton treats him as the main suspect. Allan is married, but he and Louis's mother, Natalie, are drawn to each other. Letters arrive threatening the pair and telling them to keep apart, signed, so the writer claims, by Louis. Dalton warns Allan off Natalie, and flashbacks show Louis's earlier mishaps and his meetings with the psychiatrist Dr. Perez.
