Plot summary
A young Gascon named D'Artagnan sets out for Paris to take a place in the King's Musketeers. At an inn along the road he quarrels with one of the escorts of a lady he does not know, and wakes to find that the letter his father wrote for him has been destroyed. He reaches the city anyway and presents himself to de Treville, commander of the Musketeers, who makes him a cadet. Catching sight of one of the men from the inn, he rushes to confront him and in doing so offends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, three of the finest swordsmen in the company, and each demands satisfaction. Richelieu's guards arrive to arrest the Musketeers, and D'Artagnan fights at their side. He also meets Constance Bonacieux, who serves Queen Anne, wife of King Louis XIII.

- Gene Kelly broke his ankle in October 1947, forcing him to give up the leading role in Easter Parade (1948) and delaying the start of filming on The Three Musketeers. His elaborate fencing scenes needed more healing time and were pushed back to the end of shooting.
- Lana Turner withdrew from The Three Musketeers in January 1948 and was put on suspension, with Alida Valli considered as her replacement. She eventually agreed to make the film, which became her first in color.
- Vincent Price said he and Lana Turner played complicated practical jokes on each other while making The Three Musketeers, until Gene Kelly yelled at them to stop, and they didn't.
- Louis Hayward showed interest in playing d'Artagnan in an adaptation by Edward Small, but withdrew when he found out that MGM was already producing its own version of The Three Musketeers.
- Deborah Kerr was offered the remaining female lead in November 1947, before June Allyson was cast in the part.
