Plot summary
Konrad Ludwig is a handsome young stranger drawn to a castle outside the Bavarian village of Ornstein. The castle belongs to Countess Herthe von Ornstein, a widow who lives in its dower house because she cannot afford to keep it up. Konrad wants the castle for himself. He romances Anneliese Pleschke, the beautiful daughter of a newly rich couple, and means to spend her family's money on reopening the castle. He also seeks a place in the countess's household, where he hopes to work as a footman. The household also includes the countess's grown children, the shy Helmuth and the plain Lotte, and the stern majordomo Klaus.
