Plot summary
During Prohibition in Oklahoma, Rubin Flood sells harnesses and saddles, a trade the growing number of automobiles makes harder each year. When his company shuts down, he stops at a pharmacy for medicinal alcohol rather than carry the news home. His wife Cora strikes him as demanding and overprotective of their son Sonny, who is afraid of the dark and bullied at school, and their teenage daughter Reenie dreads going out on dates. An argument about what Cora spent on Reenie's party dress ends with Cora accusing Rubin of an affair with Mavis Pruitt, a widow in the town. Rubin slaps her and walks out.
