Plot summary
Jane Broadbent, seventeen, arrives in London to live with her father, Lord Jimmy Broadbent. Her stepmother, Lady Sheila, driven by her own social ambitions, brings the girl out into the debutante season and its round of balls. Jane is bored by the parties and by the young men she meets, and she takes an interest in a drummer, David Parkson, who is said to have led young women astray. Sheila is convinced the reputation is earned and works to keep him from Jane. An upper-class suitor with flawless credentials, David Fenner, pursues Jane, who openly dislikes him, while Sheila's talkative friend Mabel Claremont schemes to match Fenner with her own daughter, Clarissa.
