Plot summary

Emily, a young orphan, has been left in Mother Genevieve's care. At Christmastime in Belford Falls, an angel leaves a letter for Annabelle Hill and her husband, saying that Emily waits at the children's hospital to be adopted. She wakes to find Rose beside her, and Rose tells the story of Annabelle Kingsley, a girl raised in Millbury during the era of robber barons. Annabelle had scarlet fever as a baby, and in answer to her father William's prayer an angel visited the Kingsley home and vowed to remain with her. Her father later leaves on a fishing trip that keeps him away for more than a year.
