Plot summary
As a boy, Tom Popper rarely saw his father, who traveled the world. Now divorced and raising Janie and Billy, Tom inherits a gentoo penguin named Captain after his father dies in Antarctica. He shuts the bird in a bathroom, where it floods his apartment, and a call to his father's organization to take it back brings five more penguins instead. His children assume the birds are Billy's birthday present, so Tom keeps them, caring for them at night and paying the apartment clerk to stay quiet. Nat Jones, the zookeeper at the New York Zoo, offers to take the birds off his hands. At the office, Tom must persuade Selma Van Gundy to sell him her Central Park restaurant, and the penguins keep intruding on their meetings.
