Plot summary
Linnet Ridgeway, a rich English heiress, hires Simon Doyle, the fiancé of her friend Jacqueline de Bellefort, to look after her estate, and then marries him. The couple honeymoon in Egypt, where Jacqueline follows them, and they take a cruise up the Nile aboard the paddle steamer Karnak. Hercule Poirot and the lawyer Colonel Race are among the passengers. Several others aboard have reasons to resent Linnet: her maid Louise Bourget was refused a promised dowry, Mrs. Van Schuyler wants her pearls, and Salome Otterbourne is being sued by her for libel. Linnet's American trustee, Andrew Pennington, has been taking money from the family. One morning Linnet is found shot in her cabin, and Poirot begins questioning everyone aboard.

- Albert Finney, Poirot in the previous film, did not want to endure the heavy make-up in the Egyptian sun, so the producers changed direction entirely and picked Peter Ustinov.
- Costume designer Anthony Powell, who won his second Academy Award for the work, created shoes for Chiles with diamond-studded heels sourced from a millionaire's collection, and shoes for Davis made from the scales of 26 pythons.
- Desert filming required a makeup call at 4 a.m. and shooting at 6 a.m., to accommodate a two-hour delay around noon when temperatures hovered near 54 °C (130 °F).
- The film reportedly became the most successful foreign film ever shown in mainland China at the time, drawing 5 million admissions in Shanghai alone.
- EMI sold the US television rights to the film for more money than the entire production had cost to make.
