Plot summary
Ralph and Annabell Willart live with their two sons, and the elder, Berry-Berry, is rarely home. He travels the country, seducing women, living off them, and when they grow too attached he turns violent, which has landed him in jail more than once. Clinton, sixteen, idolizes his brother regardless. Echo O'Brien, thirty-one and unmarried, is the daughter of a family friend and stays with the Willarts when she visits town. She is getting over the suicide of a longtime boyfriend. Clinton is infatuated with her, and she is friendly toward him. When she meets Berry-Berry, the attraction between them is instant.

- Producer John Houseman wrote in his memoirs that Warren Beatty was the production's most serious problem: his determination to emulate Marlon Brando and Jimmy Dean and his half-baked, overzealous notions of Method acting perplexed and antagonized the cast and crew.
