Plot summary
Velvet Brown, twelve years old and horse-crazy, lives with her family in the village of Sewels in Sussex. A troublesome stallion is raffled off by his owner, and Velvet wins him; she gives him the name Pie. Into the household comes Mi Taylor, a penniless young drifter whose late father's address book held Mrs. Brown's name. Mrs. Brown stays vague about how she knew his father, yet she talks her husband Herbert, a thrifty butcher, into hiring Mi as a store helper with a room in the barn. Pie shows promise, and Velvet begs Mi to get the horse ready for the Grand National steeplechase. To cover the costs, Mrs. Brown hands over the prize money she once won for swimming the English Channel.

- Mickey Rooney's scenes were shot first, in one month allotted by the U.S. Army, before Rooney was inducted for military service in June 1944.
- An 18-year-old Gene Tierney, who was then appearing on Broadway, was offered the role of Velvet Brown in 1939, but production was delayed, so Tierney returned to Broadway.
- Elizabeth Taylor was given "The Pie", the horse she rides in the film, as a birthday gift after filming was over.
