Berton Churchill
Biography
Berton Churchill was a Canadian actor whose career spanned stage and film. Born in Toronto, he moved to New York City, where he studied law at night and acted with the William J. Florence Dramatic Society before joining stock companies in 1903. He performed with a traveling repertory company, made his Broadway debut in The Barber of New Orleans (1909) and last appeared there in Five Star Final (1930). An early member of Actors Equity, he helped found the Masquers club in 1925 and the Screen Actors Guild in 1933. From about 1929 he turned to motion pictures, moving to Hollywood after sound arrived. He specialized in supporting roles as stern or pompous figures, bankers, governors, and land barons, appearing in more than 125 films and working with directors John Ford and Frank Capra. His best-known role was the absconding banker Gatewood in Ford's Stagecoach (1939).
