Plot summary
Mary, Ruth and Vivian, classmates years earlier at a New York City elementary school, meet again a decade later and share a match to light their cigarettes. Mary, once sent to reform school, is a showgirl with a settled, steady life. Ruth works as a stenographer. Vivian has the most of the three: a lawyer husband, Robert Kirkwood, and a young son, Robert Jr., yet she is unhappy with her life and plans a voyage to Europe. Before she and Junior are to set sail, Mary comes aboard the liner with two men for a farewell party. One of them, the gambler Michael Loftus, pays Vivian attention and talks her into leaving with him. Just before the ship departs, she collects Junior and her bags and goes ashore.
