Plot summary
Dr. Clitterhouse treats jewel robbery as a medical study, recording his pulse, temperature and blood pressure before and after each crime and while it is happening. A handful of robberies gives him only a small amount of data, and he wants a much larger sample. Police Inspector Lewis Lane, a patient of his, names the city's biggest fence, Joe Keller. Clitterhouse visits Keller to sell his stolen goods and finds that Joe is Jo. Jo and the thieves led by 'Rocks' Valentine are impressed by his account of his robberies, and Jo invites him to join them. He accepts, and tells people he is leaving for a six-week vacation in Europe.
