Plot summary
The Monroe department store is a financial powerhouse, and Kurt Anderson, its ruthless general manager, has built it that way through brutally efficient strategies and autocratic leadership. Garfinkle, a clothing supplier, tells him that labor trouble will delay part of his first big order by three days; Anderson cancels the order and has his secretary sue for damages. With the Depression cutting into business, he presses his department heads for new ideas. Martin West supplies one, but Higgins, who has long run the men's clothing department, objects, so Anderson fires him and makes Martin his assistant, warning that business must come before everything else. Anderson also hires Madeleine Walters, broke and unemployed, as a model in the clothing department. She and Martin fall in love without Anderson knowing.

- Warren William was not originally cast as the lead in Employees' Entrance; he replaced Hale Hamilton, who ended up in a smaller part. Edward G. Robinson had also been offered the lead role.
- Alice White had been a major star for Warner Bros. during the silent-to-sound transition, but her star had faded by Employees' Entrance. Her supporting role sent her onto a comeback trail, though a scandal later in 1933 returned her to supporting roles.
