Plot summary
Jan Morrow runs her interior decorating business from her apartment in New York City and depends on a telephone party line that Brad Allen, a Broadway composer in a nearby building, keeps busy for hours serenading a succession of women with the same love song. Jan complains to the telephone company and gets nowhere. Jonathan Forbes, a millionaire client, keeps proposing marriage and she keeps refusing. He is an old college friend of Brad's and the backer of his show, and he confides that Jan is the woman he wants. One evening at a nightclub Brad watches Jan dance, sees who she is, and, drawn to her, invents a Texas rancher named Rex Stetson to court her.

- Rock Hudson's street scene, Brad storming into Jan's apartment, yanking her out of bed and carrying her through Manhattan, was shot first. Because Hudson had back problems and there were many takes, Doris Day rode on a shelf hidden under her sheets and blankets.

The ending first planned for Pillow Talk had Jan switch off the light with the line "All apartments look alike in the dark"; the finished film instead shows Jan and Brad married and expecting a baby.- Director Michael Gordon had been blacklisted and was working on Broadway when producer Ross Hunter saw his staging of The Tender Trap and felt the play had the temper and spirit he wanted for Pillow Talk.
- The Production Code Administration was displeased by the title Pillow Talk, and by February 1959 it had been changed to Any Way the Wind Blows; the original title was reinstated that August.
- The script spent 16 years reaching the screen: RKO bought it in 1942, writers Russell Rouse and Clarence Greene bought it back in 1945 and again after selling it as a play in 1947, finally selling it in 1958 to Arwin Productions, the company of Doris Day's husband Martin Melcher.
- Laykin et Cie lent the production $500,000 worth of jewels for Doris Day to wear in the film.
- Pillow Talk was Rock Hudson's first comedy, after a run of 1950s dramas including All That Heaven Allows and A Farewell to Arms; producer Ross Hunter was the one who saw his comic potential.
- The film remade Doris Day's screen image from "the girl next door" to classy sex symbol; she said its plot was very sexy for the time, with the leading man carrying her out of bed in her pajamas and into the streets.
