Biography

Alain Delon was a French actor, film producer, screenwriter, and singer, and for decades one of Europe's leading screen stars. He was born in Sceaux, near Paris, and came to movies without formal acting training. His international reputation grew through Purple Noon (1960), in which he played Tom Ripley, and Rocco and His Brothers (1960), and he earned praise for L'Eclisse (1962). He worked with directors including Luchino Visconti, Jean-Pierre Melville, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Joseph Losey. Among his other films were Any Number Can Win (1963), The Black Tulip (1964), The Last Adventure (1967), The Swimming Pool (1969), Borsalino (1970), Un Flic (1972), and Mr. Klein (1976). His performance in Notre histoire (1984) brought him France's César for best actor. He later received an honorary Golden Bear and an honorary Palme d'Or. He also supplied the spoken part of the 1973 song Paroles, paroles with Dalida.
