SPOILER
Italian authorities seized the negative of Rocco and His Brothers twenty days after its Italian opening, acting on a request from Cardinal Secretary of State Domenico Tardini against "certain destructive films". Producer Goffredo Lombardo avoided confiscation by agreeing to darken four scenes, and Visconti was never told that two were later cut.SPOILER
Provincial premier Adrio Casati blocked previously approved filming permits once he learned Visconti planned to shoot the climactic murder at the Idroscalo recreation area, because a young prostitute had recently been murdered there. Visconti moved the scene to Lago di Fondi in Lazio.- A local judge named Pafundi, who had heard rumours about the film's content and did not want people to think it was about him, threatened to sue the producers. Visconti therefore re-dubbed and re-edited the film during post-production to rename the central family from "Pafundi" to "Parondi".
- Renato Salvatori, who played Simone, and Annie Girardot, who played Nadia, eloped during the Milan shoot of Rocco and His Brothers and married two years later.
- Francis Ford Coppola cited Rocco and His Brothers as an inspiration for The Godfather, Martin Scorsese put it on his list of 39 foreign films to see before you die, and Roger Ebert added it to his Great Movies list in 2008.
- In 2008 the film was placed on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage's 100 Italian films to be saved, a list of films said to have changed the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978.
