Plot summary
Roger Borniche is a detective who, unlike his colleagues, prides himself on a methodical approach to police work. He is handed the case of Emile Buisson, who escaped a psychiatric institution after losing his wife and child and came back to Paris. Buisson becomes France's public enemy number one, and stays out of reach by killing the informants and anyone else he thinks might give him away. Borniche hunts him for three years, through alleyways, rooftops, car chases and shootouts. Bureaucracy interferes with the investigation, and politicians and the media begin to speculate. The pursuit puts Borniche's lover Catherine in danger.
