Jean-Claude Brialy
Biography
Jean-Claude Brialy was a French actor of the New Wave. Born in French colonial Algeria in 1933, he studied dramatics in Strasbourg before settling in Paris in 1954 and joining a circle of filmmakers that included Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette. After work as an extra on Jean Renoir's Elena and Her Men (1956) and short films by Rohmer and Rivette, he became a star through Chabrol's Le Beau Serge (1958) and Les Cousins (1959). He moved easily between stark melodrama and comedy farce, appeared opposite Jeanne Moreau in François Truffaut's The Bride Wore Black (1968) and led Rohmer's Claire's Knee (1970). In the 1970s he turned to writing and directing, beginning with the award-winning Églantine (1972), while later supporting work brought him a César nomination for his role in The Judge and the Assassin (1976) and a César for Les innocents (1987). He also directed theaters and festivals and died in 2007.
