Plot summary
Diego de la Vega, bound home for Spain from Alta California, runs into Miguel de la Serna, an old friend who is to become governor of Nueva Aragón. Diego warns him that greed and hatred rule the province, where Colonel Huerta has replaced Miguel's late uncle Don Fernando. That night Huerta's men kill Miguel, and Diego takes his place, swearing to the dying Miguel that the new governor will never kill. In Nueva Aragón he plays a weak, indecisive fop before the council so that Huerta dismisses him as harmless. With Joaquín, Miguel's mute servant, and Assassin, Don Fernando's Great Dane, he moves among the people and finds them frightened. From Chico, a street urchin, he learns about Zorro, the freedom-loving fox spirit, and takes that black-garbed identity for his own.
