Plot summary
On a rainy winter day, Simon and three accomplices rob a bank in Saint-Jean-de-Monts. Paul Weber and Marc Albouis go inside with him while Louis Costa waits in the getaway car. A teller sounds the alarm and shoots Marc. The crew gets away with part of the money and drives back to Paris, leaving Marc in the private Clinique Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire under the alias Schmidt. Edouard Coleman, a commissaire, works nights, moving from one crime scene to the next and keeping in touch with informants. He visits the club Simon runs after closing time and greets Simon, newly back from Saint-Jean-de-Monts. Cathy, Simon's girlfriend, is there; she is also Edouard's mistress. Once the press reports that a robber was wounded, Simon, Louis and Paul plan to move Marc before the police reach him.

- Melville planned the stunts to be shot on set using day-for-night, but the scenes ended up shot in a studio; for some sequences he used scale models and toys across an area ten metres in diameter, convinced he was doing something extraordinary.
- Alain Delon said on set that Melville let him choose between playing a cop or Simon the gangster, and he picked Commissaire Édouard Coleman to satisfy those who criticised him for indulging in bad-boy characters.
- The role of Cathy was conceived by Melville with Catherine Deneuve, who agreed to take it only if all her scenes could be shot earlier in development, as the actress was in the early stages of pregnancy.
