Maurice Ronet
Biography
Maurice Ronet built a prolific career in European cinema as an actor, director, and writer. Born in Nice in 1927, he trained at the Paris Conservatoire, where Jean-Louis Barrault mentored him, and his first screen role came at 22, in Rendez-vous de juillet (1949), which Jacques Becker directed. He gained notice at Cannes in 1953 for Endless Horizons, then played romantic leads in The Blonde Witch (1956) and He Who Must Die (1957). His international breakthrough was as Julien Tavernier in Louis Malle's Elevator to the Gallows (1958), and he originated Philippe Greenleaf in Purple Noon (1960). His defining role, an alcoholic writer in Malle's The Fire Within (1963), brought him France's Crystal Star and a best actor award at the 1965 São Paulo festival. Other notable films included The Swimming Pool (1969) and The Unfaithful Wife (1969). He also directed The Thief of Tibidabo (1964), made television adaptations, and wrote books. He died in 1983.

Ronet was 22 when he first appeared on screen, in Jacques Becker's Rendez-vous de juillet, in a part Becker had written specifically for him. At that point he had little interest in an acting career.

Ronet studied at the Centre du Spectacle de la Rue-Blanche, a Parisian acting school, and in 1944 he began at the Paris Conservatoire, where Jean-Louis Barrault served as one of his mentors.
Behind the camera
Ronet directed his first film, The Thief of Tibidabo, in 1964. He also acted in this self-reflexive crime story, which was shot in Barcelona and featured Anna Karina.

Ronet directed and produced his own adaptation of Herman Melville's Bartleby for television in 1976, and it came out in theaters in 1978.
