Plot summary
Roussillon, June 1789. By day Guillaume de Saint Preux is an aristocrat; by night he wears a mask and robs wealthy nobles as the Black Tulip. The peasants of the region treat the bandit as their hero. Baron La Mouche, certain that the nobleman and the outlaw are one man, slashes the Tulip's cheek during a hold-up, expecting the mark to give Guillaume away. Guillaume then brings in his twin brother Julien, a gentler and more idealistic man, to stand in for him. Julien's imitation passes at first. He falls for Caroline, the daughter of the revolutionary Plantin, and she drills him in swordsmanship.
