Plot summary
Franz Propp and Dino Barran served together in the French Foreign Legion and left the service when the war in Algeria ended. Propp, a legionnaire, urges Barran, an army doctor, to accompany him to the Congo, but Barran remains to help Isabelle Moreau. Barran accidentally killed her lover in Algeria, and she asks him for a different favor: a post at a large Paris company, with Dominique Austerlitz as his assistant, and a task over the Christmas break. He is to put missing documents back into the firm's safe without anyone noticing. Propp, now working as a pimp, slips into the building after him and learns that millions in wages are also stored inside that safe.
