Plot summary
Tom Ripley, a young American forger and mimic, is sent to Italy by Philippe Greenleaf's father to persuade the wealthy playboy to come home to San Francisco and run the family business. He has been promised $5,000 for bringing Philippe home. Philippe refuses; he prefers his yacht, his seaside town of Mongibello, and his fiancée, Marge. Tom becomes fixated on their life of luxury and on Marge. Philippe grows bored with Tom and treats him cruelly. When Mr. Greenleaf learns that Philippe will not return, he cuts off the payment he promised Tom for the mission. Tom, needing the money, begs Philippe to go home to his father.
