Plot summary
At Dien Bien Phu in 1954, the French battalion under Lt. Col. Pierre-Noël Raspéguy waits for a final Viet Minh assault. Headquarters answers his calls for reinforcements with a single planeload of paratroopers, who are killed as they land. The position is overrun and Raspéguy and his men are imprisoned, then released under a treaty. Countess Nathalie de Clairefons, widow of the major who died bringing that one planeload, becomes Raspéguy's companion, and her military contacts help him win command of the 10th Regiment of Parachutistes Coloniaux under General Melies in Algeria, who tells him that if the regiment fails his career is finished. Raspéguy gathers officers from Indochina and drills them with harsh methods, and Lt. Ben Mahidi, an Algerian-born paratrooper, is outraged by the police shooting of his teenage brother.
