Plot summary
Charles leaves prison after five years for attempted robbery and finds Ginette, his wife, waiting with plans for a respectable life. He wants the Cannes casino instead. Francis, a petty thief he met inside who is unhappy with his working-class background, signs on, along with Louis, Francis's brother-in-law, a mechanic. Charles sends Francis ahead to the resort to pose as a wealthy high-roller and find a way backstage, toward the elevator shaft that leads to the basement vault where the casino's proceeds are kept. Francis takes up with Brigitte, a dancer, and the comforts of his rich disguise pull him away from Charles's instructions. Louis, uneasy about what sudden money would do to him, tells Charles he will give up his share.

- Alain Delon took the film's distribution rights in certain countries instead of a straight salary — the first time this had been done in France, and it became known as "Delon's method". Jean Gabin later claimed Delon earned ten times more than he did, with Delon reportedly making $125,000 from the Japanese rights alone.
- The role of Francis was initially planned for Jean-Louis Trintignant, but Alain Delon lobbied producer Jacques Bar for the part. The American producers opposed Delon's casting, saying he was not well known outside France and Italy and should do the film for free.
